Characters: Lady Sneerwell- A widow, a wealthy woman who likes Charles. She finds an ally in Joseph & they start to scheme, her tendency to spread rumors Snake- Lady Sneerwell’s servant who helps her by spreading her rumors. Joseph Surface- Charles’ brother, cunning & ambitious. He wants to marry Maria because of her money & he plots with Lady Sneerwell. Charles Surface- A warmhearted but hard-partying man, the younger Surface brother is known around town for his extravagance.  Sir Oliver Surface- Charles & Joseph’s uncle, in East Indies for a long time. Sir Peter Teazle- A wealthy gentleman who has recently married a much younger woman & having trouble adapting to married life. Lady Teazle- Sir Peter’s young wife, with a passion for having fashionable clothes, thinks about having an affair with Joseph. Maria- Young ward of Sir Peter. She attracts the courtship & admiration of both Charles & Joseph, though her affections lie with Charles. Mr. Rowley- The former steward to the father of Joseph & Charles.
