Hidden Mountain Ruins

This week on Adventures with Sir Eli, we continued our journey back toward Patagonia, Arizona, taking the back roads through some of Southern Arizona’s rugged and historic country. Our route took us through Harshaw and then deeper into the mountains toward Soldier Basin, where the pavement was long gone and the real exploring began. Along the way, we stumbled across two unnamed ruins hidden out in the mountains. With no signs and very little left to tell their story, we could only wonder who lived or worked there and what brought them to such a remote part of Arizona. From Soldier Basin, we continued onto Guajalote Flat Loop 4695, following winding dirt roads through beautiful mountain scenery, quiet valleys, and places most travelers never get the chance to see. Trips like this are exactly why we enjoy exploring Southern Arizona. You never really know what might be around the next bend — an abandoned ruin, an old mining road, an incredible view, or another piece of Arizona history slowly being reclaimed by the desert.
