10 U.S. Rangers Who Became Japan's Worst Nightmare Deep behind Japanese lines in the Philippines, a small force of U.S. Army Rangers was given a mission that sounded almost impossible: reach a prisoner-of-war camp before the Japanese could kill the men inside, destroy the guards, rescue hundreds of prisoners, and get everyone back to friendly territory. That mission became the legendary Raid on Cabanatuan. But Cabanatuan was only part of the story of the 6th Ranger Battalion.
