iRacing Vintage Grand Prix Tour Round 1 | Lotus 79 at Spa

Welcome to the first round of the iRacing Vintage Grand Prix Tour—a year-long journey through full-length races in the legendary Lotus 79! This one kicks off at the equally iconic Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps, and I couldn’t think of a better place to start. I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous going in. I’m much more of a sports car racer than a formula driver, and I think the last time I touched the Lotus 79 was a single race a couple of years ago. So, expectations were set somewhere between survival and learning experience. To my surprise, the event had three splits, which is pretty awesome for a vintage car series. I ended up in the top split as car #19 of 24, and since I hadn’t really practiced with my quali setup, I slotted into P20 on the grid. Once the race kicked off, I felt like I got a decent launch—but I completely misjudged the cars in front of me checking-up into Eau Rouge. Luckily, I escaped without incident. What followed was some of the most exciting racing I’ve had in a while—tight battles, slipstream duels, and classic open-wheel chaos in all the best ways. 🏁 Can I work my way forward from the back of the grid?
