Stoke Space is developing Nova, a fully reusable rocket designed to take a very different approach from SpaceX’s Starship. In this video, we take a closer look at Nova Block 2 and its ambitious goal of carrying up to 15 tons to low Earth orbit while remaining fully reusable. We’ll explore why Block 2’s more cylindrical second stage is such a major change from the original Nova Pathfinder design. Then we’ll dive into Stoke’s unusual metallic heat shield, which uses liquid hydrogen to actively cool itself during reentry. Even more surprisingly, that heat shield is actually integrated directly into Nova’s upper-stage engine system. We’ll look at how 24 thrust chambers and differential throttling allow the vehicle to control its direction without traditional engine gimbaling. This unique design also allows Nova to attempt something very unusual: reentering and landing base-first. We’ll compare Stoke’s approach with SpaceX’s Starship, from their heat shields and reentry methods to their overall vehicle architectures. While Starship is vastly larger and aims for dramatically greater payload capacity, Nova is targeting a smaller medium-lift market with potentially much higher flight cadence. The big question is whether Stoke can actually make all of these ambitious technologies work reliably outside of testing. And if it can, Nova could become one of the most interesting new contenders in the race to make fully reusable rockets a reality.
