This unique exercise is a powerful tool for sprained ankle rehab or for just improving the function of your feet and ankles. Improving your ankle strength can help prevent painful sprains. Improving ankle mobility can help you feel agile and reactive. This exercise combines both and works your ankles in a way they’ve probably never been worked before. Most ankle exercises and sprained ankle rehab programs focus on the sagittal plane movements of plantarflexion and dorsiflexion that occur at the talocrural joint. But that approach ignores the frontal plane movements of inversion and eversion that occur at the subtalar joint – movements that are often involved in ankle injuries. The technique you’ll learn in this video combines all these movements to dissociate habitual patterns. It wakes up the muscles of your feet and ankles that are often atrophied from being stuck in shoes all day and challenges them to fire in new ways – helping protect your ankle joint and provide stability. Plus, it will challenge your range of motion so you’re increasing mobility as well. [3:43] You’ll learn how to dissociate a habitual pattern to combine eversion and plantarflexion. [4:44] You’ll also challenge your brain and body by combining inversion and dorsiflexion. Moving in these new ways will help increase both your subtalar and talocrural mobility. It will also activate the muscles of your feet and ankles and increase the quality of proprioceptive data to your brain. But best of all, it can help you protect yourself from future ankle sprains or recover from a previous injury.
