February 27th, 1942. The Allied ABDA fleet – Dutch, British, American, and Australian ships – faced overwhelming Japanese naval power in the Battle of the Java Sea. Led by Dutch Rear Admiral Karel Doorman, the cruisers De Ruyter, Java, HMS Exeter, USS Houston, and HMAS Perth sailed into history. Outgunned by Vice Admiral Takeo Takagi’s force – including heavy cruisers Nachi and Haguro – the Allied fleet fought on against impossible odds. As shells and torpedoes tore through the formation, Doorman sent a signal that would become immortal: “I am attacking, follow me.” This Sabaton-style anthem honors that courage in the face of certain defeat. #powermetal #historysong * * Across the eastern waves, the gun-smoke climbs, Makassar’s strait tolls iron chimes. Signals flare in the dying light, Four nations sail into the night. Exeter! Scarred but unbroken steel – Houston! Refuses to yield or kneel. Perth! With engines straining hard – Java! Standing battered, scarred – De Ruyter! Flag in the burning sky – Four flags united… prepared to die. Range closes fast through smoke and glare, Haguro’s broadsides split the air. Nachi’s flashes scar the night, Long Lances carve their silver flight. Exeter reels – her boilers torn, Kortenaer lost in firestorm. Radio static – command unclear – Yet one voice rises calm and sheer – Flooding decks and burning sky, Steel may bend but won’t comply. Four flags torn by shot and sea, No hand will strike surrender free. Signal lamps in crimson flare, Cut through smoke and powder air – “I am attacking – follow me!” Through hell and shattered sea! Against the guns of destiny, We sail where none shall flee! “I am attacking – follow me!” Though doom stands plain to see, Better to burn in unity – Than fade in history! Takagi watches, cold and sure, Superior guns, decisive, pure. Japan’s precision, drilled and fast, A storm no battered fleet could last. Java struck and falling behind, Perth still fighting, teeth half-lined. Houston answers gun for gun, Though ammunition nearly done. De Ruyter turns through smoke and flame, Holding formation, earning her name. Shells rain down like iron decree – The sea prepares its memory. “I am attacking – follow me!” The last command set free. Though broken steel and failing speed, Still courage plants the final seed. “I am attacking – follow me!” Through fire and destiny, Four flags stood in unity – Forever in the Java Sea. A flash beneath the midnight swell, One torpedo tolls her knell. De Ruyter burns against the sky, Doorman standing, doomed yet high. No rescue turns, no retreat call – Admiral and ship together fall. Exeter limps, but fate is sealed, Houston and Perth refuse to yield. One by one the guns grow still – The tropic sea grows deathly chill. Exeter limps with engines strained, Her forward turrets split and maimed. Through reef and channel, smoke and spray, She fights to see another day. But northward fate has set her course, Nachi returns with crushing force. Myoko closes, shells descend – Alone she stands, without a friend. Boilers burst and speed is gone, Her captain orders: “Carry on.” Till listing slow in bitter sea – She joins the lost of history. “I am attacking – follow me!” The last command set free. Though broken steel and failing speed, Still courage plants the final seed. “I am attacking – follow me!” Through fire and destiny, Four flags stood in unity – Forever in the Java Sea. Houston turns with wounded side, Perth beside her in the tide. Black strait waters, narrow grave, Yet neither ship consents to cave. Ammunition nearly bare, Still their guns light up the air. Against a fleet that fills the night, They blaze until the end of fight. Torpedoes bloom like fatal flowers, Steel collapses under showers. Side by side in flame they lie – Two more flags refuse to die. “I am attacking – follow me!” His words outlive the sea. From Java’s dusk to Sunda’s flame, They sealed their fate in honor’s name. “I am attacking – follow me!” No greater legacy – Four nations fought in unity, Forever in the eastern sea. No victory carved in stone that day, No trumpet loud for their display. But when the waves are black and high – You’ll hear that signal in the sky: Follow me…
