The proposed fleet includes 30 Mercedes-Benz Maybach S680 Guard (VR10) vehicles, for which the ECC has already approved Rs6.60 billion, along with 15 BMW 760i xDrive (VR9) bulletproof sedans costing around Rs3 billion. The combined reported allocation comes to approximately Rs9.6 billion. The government says these vehicles are required for the security and transportation of visiting heads of state and foreign dignitaries during the SCO summit. The issue has also raised questions because the government has an existing ban on the purchase of new vehicles under its austerity measures. The ECC has directed the Cabinet Division to seek an exemption from that ban, while separate cases are also being prepared regarding possible duties and tax exemptions.
