12 Frugal Habits in Japan 🇯🇵 inspired by Japanese frugal living, Mottainai, saving money, leftovers, simple meals, and everyday life in rural Tohoku. How many of these Japanese habits do you already follow? Growing up in Japan, I learned that living frugally doesn't mean giving up good food or enjoying life. Sometimes it's simply about using what you already have, avoiding waste, buying simple ingredients, and turning leftovers into a delicious meal. In this video, I'm sharing 12 frugal habits I learned growing up in Japan — from cooking rice in batches and making the most of leftovers to avoiding food waste, using affordable ingredients, and finding small ways to save money every day. And yes… being frugal doesn't mean skipping dessert! 🍵🤣 There's always room in the budget for a little shiratama matcha dessert. One of my favorite examples is turning simple ingredients into comforting Japanese meals like miso soup with leftover daikon and natto okonomiyaki made with ingredients already in the fridge. 🌱 In this video: • 12 Japanese frugal habits • Mottainai — the idea of avoiding waste • Saving money through everyday habits • Cooking with leftovers • Budget-friendly Japanese meals • Simple living in rural Japan • Natto okonomiyaki • Daikon & tofu miso soup • Making the most of what's already in your kitchen • Finding joy in simple, affordable living 🍜 RECIPE — Miso Soup with Daikon & Tofu Ingredients (2 servings): ・Daikon — as needed, microwaved ・Dried wakame — a pinch ・Powdered dashi — 1 tsp ・Firm tofu — as needed, cubed ・Miso — to taste Instructions: ① Add dried wakame and powdered dashi to water. ② Add microwaved daikon and dissolve the miso into the soup. ③ Add cubed tofu, cook through, and enjoy. 🥬 **RECIPE — Natto Okonomiyaki Ingredients (1–2 servings): ・Rice flour or all-purpose flour — 100g ・Egg — 1 ・Water — 100ml ・Shirodashi — 1 tbsp ・Cabbage — 150g ・Thinly sliced pork — 100g ・Nagaimo — as needed ・Natto — 1 pack (optional) Toppings: ・Okonomiyaki sauce ・Mayonnaise ・Bonito flakes ・Red pickled ginger ⏱️ VIDEO CHAPTERS 00:00 — 12 Frugal Habits in Japan 🇯🇵 | Introduction 00:35 — Habit 1: Cook Rice in Batches 🍚 01:15 — Habit 2: Prepare Breakfast in Advance 🍙 01:55 — Habit 3: Take Care of Your Belongings 02:35 — Habit 4: Turn Old Clothes into Cleaning Cloths 03:15 — Habit 5: Declutter Before Buying Storage 03:55 — Habit 6: Check Your Fridge Before Shopping 04:35 — Habit 7: Plan Meals Around Ingredients 05:10 — Habit 8: Carry Your Own Drink 🥤 05:45 — Habit 9: Buy Only What You Actually Need 06:20 — Habit 10: Don't Buy Something Just Because It's Cheap 06:55 — Habit 11: Leave Room for Small Pleasures 🍵 07:35 — Habit 12: Turn Leftovers into a New Meal 🍜 08:35 — Mottainai: The Japanese Idea of Not Wasting 09:25 — What Frugal Living Really Means 10:15 — How Many of the 12 Habits Do You Already Do? 10:45 — Final Thoughts: The Real Meaning of Mottainai ❤️ 11:05 — Itadakimasu & Goodbye 👋 This video is about more than saving money.
