What if the person who causes you the greatest harm has also been your mother?
In this first episode of Virūpa’s Mind Training, we explore one of the most challenging and distinctive teachings in this remarkable tradition of Buddhist mind training: learning to regard the person who causes us harm within the larger perspective of beginningless samsara.
Virūpa, the great Indian mahāsiddha associated with the Sakya tradition, presents a powerful way of working with hostility, resentment and difficult relationships.
The practice begins with those who have cared for us with boundless kindness, and then asks us to extend that same understanding towards the person who is now causing us harm.
The teaching rests on the Buddhist understanding of rebirth and beginningless samsara. Someone who appears to us today as an enemy may, in another existence, have been someone who cared for us as deeply as a mother. At the same time, the person who harms us is themselves caught within the causes and conditions of samsaric existence, creating further suffering through destructive actions.
This does not mean approving harmful behaviour or abandoning appropriate boundaries. Rather, the practice challenges us to look beyond the narrow perspective of a single encounter and develop a broader understanding of the beings with whom we share samsara.
In this episode we explore:
• Who was Virūpa, and why is he important in Vajrayana Buddhism?
• The origins and transmission of Virūpa’s mind training
• The kindness of those who have cared for us
• The instruction: “This person who causes me harm has also been my mother.”
• Beginningless samsara and changing relationships across lifetimes
• How harmful actions create the causes for further suffering
• The relationship between this practice and compassion for the beings of the three realms
• A guided meditation based on Virūpa’s teaching
The episode concludes with a meditation in which we bring a difficult person to mind and work directly with the perspective presented in the text.
