The Fire That Burned Too Long | The Strange Legend of Saltersgate Inn

For generations, a peat fire was kept burning at Saltersgate Inn on the North York Moors. The instruction was simple: never let it go out. Why depended on when you asked. There were stories of a former landlord, an evil spirit, a body beneath the hearth — and eventually a murdered excise officer, supposedly killed by smugglers and hidden beneath the fire. But the further back the story is followed, the more something curious happens. The explanation changes. The fire does not. This is the story of Saltersgate Inn, the people who kept its fire alive, and an obligation passed from one pair of hands to another long after its original meaning had become uncertain.
