Our Neighbor Refused to Leave His House. We Couldn't Understand Why.

Our Neighbor Refused to Leave His House. We Couldn't Understand Why. We had the truck packed, the route marked, and room for Howard. The only problem was that the neighbor we had promised never to leave behind refused to come with us. As a zombie outbreak closes in on a quiet American neighborhood, Glen and Nora face a problem they never planned for: what happens when the person you promised to protect understands the danger and still says no? Howard is seventy-four, fully aware of what is happening, and determined to stay in the house he shared with his late wife. Every minute Glen and Nora spend trying to change his mind makes their own escape window smaller. Then the infected begin moving through the neighborhood, roads start closing, and a personal disagreement becomes a survival decision with no clean answer. This Ashroad Tales story is a grounded first-person zombie-survival narrative about promises, autonomy, chosen family, evacuation, and the cost of trying to save someone who does not want to be saved. If you enjoy long-form survival stories about ordinary people making difficult choices under collapse pressure, consider subscribing to Ashroad Tales. Would you have respected Howard’s decision—or kept pushing him to leave? ⚠️Disclaimer: This is a fictional story created for entertainment.
