On July 24th, 1975, the last Apollo spacecraft that would ever fly came home from the first joint mission with the Soviet Union. In Houston, the parachutes were on the screen and Mission Control applauded. Inside the capsule, the three astronauts could barely hear each other over their own coughing. This is the true story of the Apollo-Soyuz splashdown: Deke Slayton, who waited thirteen years for his only spaceflight, Tom Stafford, Vance Brand, and the four minutes and forty seconds on the way home that nobody had planned for. With NASA's own film, the real mission audio and NASA's mission evaluation report. 0:00 Intro 0:30 Thirteen years 1:37 Handshake 2:26 Two switches 3:45 Gas 5:18 Upside down 6:25 The price 8:37 Outro Footage and sound: NASA (public domain), the NASA Johnson Space Center film "Mission of Apollo-Soyuz" (JSC 682), the ASTP audio highlights from NASA JSC's audio collection, NASA photos from the mission and NASA KSC file footage.
