Created by visionary artist GRAHAM TIPENE (NGĀTI WHĀTUA ŌRĀKEI, NGĀTI KAHU, NGĀTI HINE, NGĀTI HAUĀ, NGĀTI MANU) , this isn't just a sculpture. This is A SPECTACULAR TRIBUTE TO THE RICH MARITIME HISTORY OF TĀMAKI MAKAURAU, AOTEAROA, AND TE MOANA NUI Ā KIWA (THE PACIFIC OCEAN)! ✨ 🌊 A Totemic Corridor of Waka Opening to the public in OCTOBER 2025, Waka Moana features NINE TOWERING WAKA-INSPIRED SCULPTURES flanking both sides of the pedestrian pathway . Each SIX-METRE HIGH sculpture, 1.3 METRES WIDE at its base, is crafted from a stunning combination of HARAKEKE COMPOSITE, GLASS REINFORCED PLASTIC (GRP) , and TŌTARA timber . As you walk along the path beneath these majestic forms, you are drawn into a SYMBOLIC JOURNEY FROM PAPATŪĀNUKU (EARTH) TO RANGINUI (SKY) – a profound connection that aligns with TE AO MĀORI, where the Atua (deities) are revered through a relationship with the natural world . At the bows of these soaring structures, a stylised TARATARA-A-KAE PATTERN – a common carving design on traditional Māori storehouses – is beautifully installed, with floating taonga (treasures) adding intricate detail . 🏛️ A Collaboration of Skill and Vision The installation was a COLLABORATIVE EFFORT led by SRS GROUP and included BESPOKE TIMBER, INNOVATE COMPOSITE, KIWI FIBRE, JFC, CONTRAX GREENSCAPES, ROYANS, PURE DESIGN AND ENGINEERING, AND MITCHELL VRANJES CONSULTING ENGINEERS . Fabrication of the waka hulls began in November 2024, with civil works (foundation plinths) starting on site in May 2025 .
