Lt. Gen. James B. Wellons Introduces Kyle Carpenter | 2026 Lone Sailor Award

Lieutenant General James B. Wellons, USMC, introduces Medal of Honor recipient Corporal William Kyle Carpenter, USMC (Ret.), as a recipient of the 2026 Lone Sailor Award from the United States Navy Memorial. Speaking on behalf of the Commandant of the Marine Corps, Lt. Gen. Wellons reflects on Carpenter’s extraordinary life of service through three chapters: his decision to join the United States Marine Corps, his heroism on the battlefield in Afghanistan, and the mission of service he continues today. In 2010, while serving as a 20-year-old Marine rifleman in Afghanistan, Carpenter shielded a fellow Marine from a grenade blast, sustaining catastrophic injuries. He later became the youngest living Medal of Honor recipient and went on to pursue ambitious goals throughout his recovery, from earning a college degree and running marathons to traveling the world. Wellons emphasizes that Kyle Carpenter’s legacy extends far beyond his sacrifice in combat. Through his memoir, You Are Worth It: Building a Life Worth Fighting For, his public speaking, and his continued support of service members, veterans, and Americans facing adversity, Carpenter has made resilience, perseverance, and service to others a continuing mission. The Lone Sailor Award recognizes Sea Service veterans who have distinguished themselves in their careers while continuing to exemplify the values of Honor, Courage, and Commitment. Presented at the 2026 Lone Sailor Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., by the United States Navy Memorial.
