Two quiet years follow, the kind that get edited out of the highlight reel. Then a blizzard grounds two young producers named Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis in Atlanta, they miss a Time show in San Antonio, and Prince fires them the same night they're mixing "Just Be Good to Me." One career ends and another begins in the same room. What comes after is a decade of records you've had in your car for thirty years — "Tell Me If You Still Care," "Just the Way You Like It," "Weekend Girl," "The Finest" — landing a little lower each time while the people making them came apart underneath. Mary Davis didn't leave for ego. She left because the schedule broke her, and the solo album she made in recovery sat on a shelf for twenty-seven years. Billy Ellis died before they could finish the record they were making without her. Their last album didn't chart at all. And in 1990, while all of that was happening, "Just Be Good to Me" went to number one in Britain for four weeks — sung by somebody else entirely. Nobody destroyed this band. That's what makes it sit so heavy. It was the pace, the producers who came and went, the songs that belonged to other people, and time doing what time does.
