In Arakhi village of Data taluka, Banaskantha, a ruthless bootlegger allegedly carried out a fatal assault on elderly Rameshji Thakor. Twenty-four days later, the old man is still fighting for his life in hospital, and the accused has not been arrested. Family members say a complaint was filed at the police station, and they asked for a stronger section so the bootlegger could be picked up. According to them, police replied that the final section would be applied only after the old man dies. Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani and MLA Kanti Kharadi reached the hospital. Mevani repeated a line he has used before: until he gives these policemen a dose, they will not improve. He blamed the money hunger of some senior Banaskantha IPS officers for bootleggers running free, claimed liquor is pouring in from Rajasthan, and said country liquor shops and bike home-delivery are operating openly. He alleged the attacker was a pawn of the Pathawala liquor network, and that dens are still running across Banaskantha — including within two to three kilometres of the IG, SP and collector offices. Mevani said the sisters, daughters and mothers of Banaskantha have not stopped becoming widows, and that the victim’s family was told action would come only after the husband dies. He announced he would sit outside the IG or SP office with his team and demanded the accused be arrested within 24 hours. He also linked the case to claims of Thakor land worth ₹150 crore being eroded in Gandhinagar, while Thakors face deadly attacks inside Banaskantha.
