Elements are arranged by proton number, and where an element sits tells you about its structure: elements in the same group (column) have the same number of outer electrons (so similar properties), and elements in the same period (row) have the same number of electron shells. In this video I explain the arrangement of elements in the periodic table for Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry (0620), topic 8.1. We cover how the modern periodic table is organised (in order of proton/atomic number), what groups and periods are, why elements in the same group behave similarly (same outer-shell electrons), how the period number tells you the number of occupied shells, and the position of metals and non-metals. Once you link position to electron arrangement, the table becomes something you can read instead of memorise.
