One giant hornet lies dead at the door of a hive. The bees won. They did it by cooking her alive at about 46 °C, only a few degrees short of what kills a bee, and the bees who fought will die sooner for it. In this animated nature documentary we follow one attack from both sides: why the world's largest hornet raids honeybee hives, how a single scout marks a colony for a mass attack, why European honeybees lose and Japanese honeybees let the hornet in, what it is like inside a ball of more than 500 bees at 46 °C, the few degrees that decide the fight, and what winning costs the bees who did it. ⏱ Chapters 0:00 The bees won 0:34 One dead giant 1:36 The scout 3:39 Let it in 4:50 Inside the ball 6:04 Two degrees 7:47 The price of winning 📚 Sources (checked September 2026) • The world's largest hornet, its size and diet: Animal Diversity Web: https://animaldiversity.org/accounts/Vespa... • Giant hornet biology, raids and the three attack phases: Washington State University factsheet: https://wpcdn.web.wsu.edu/cahnrs/uploads/s... • Japanese honeybee size: Slow Food Ark of Taste: https://www.fondazioneslowfood.com/en/ark-... • Scout hornets mark a colony with pheromone: Ono et al. 1995, Nature: https://www.nature.com/articles/377334a0 • Bees smear plant material around the entrance after a scout visit: Fujiwara et al. 2016, Apidologie: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/... • Hornet hunting and the bee ball: Ugajin et al. 2012, PLoS One: https://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?... • Japanese honeybee defences, ball heat, CO2 and humidity: Takahashi et al. 2022: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/... • Heat and carbon dioxide jointly kill the hornet: Sugahara and Sakamoto 2009: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/2... • Lethal temperatures of hornets and honeybees: Sugahara et al. 2012, Zoological Science: https://bioone.org/journals/zoological-sci... • Flight muscle warm up without wing beats: Kaya-Zeeb et al. 2022, eLife: https://elifesciences.org/articles/74334 • European honeybee stings and cooler balls: Gu et al. 2021: https://labs.biology.ucsd.edu/nieh/papers/... • Ball bees die sooner (division of risk): Yamaguchi et al. 2018, Behavioral Ecology and Sociobiology: https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/... • Asian honeybee colonies abscond to escape hornets: Robinson 2013, Journal of Apicultural Research: https://www.researchgate.net/publication/2... The hive, the hornet and the worker we follow are one illustrative story built from published research on the Japanese honeybee (Apis cerana japonica) and the Japanese giant hornet (Vespa mandarinia japonica). Temperatures, counts and times are rounded and vary between studies and colonies. Bee counts on screen are illustrative. That most ball bees survive and that colonies sometimes abandon a nest rest on thinner sources than the rest. Figures are current as of September 2026. #honeybees #hornet #nature
