“Shut Up!” Thugs Bullied the Poor Teacher — The Mafia Boss Arrived and Made Them Pay At four in the afternoon on a cold Thursday in November, in South Boston, a fourth grade teacher named Delaney Shaw walked into the narrow brick alley beside Halloran Street Elementary and found three young men blocking her path in the alley. She was twenty seven years old. Her cream cardigan was worn through at both elbows. She had a canvas bag full of spelling tests she hadn't graded yet, and there wasn't much left in her bank account. And around her neck, on a thin silver chain, hung her mother's wedding ring, the only thing that came out of the fire whole. They knew her name. They knew which grade she taught. They knew exactly what time she walked out. One of them had his phone up, filming her. They called her every ugly word they could think of, and she didn't answer. They blocked her path, and she stood there and asked them, politely, if they planned on moving. And that's when she noticed the one holding the phone kept glancing down at his watch. He didn't look nervous. He looked impatient. Then the biggest one leaned close to her face and told her to shut her mouth, and he tore the chain right off her neck. It snapped. Papers went everywhere. And Delaney Shaw didn't scream, and she didn't cry, and she didn't run. She looked at the scattered papers on the wet brick, then looked right back into his eyes without flinching. She stood perfectly still, reached into her coat, and took out her phone. Two rings. Then she said four words. I need you here. Twenty two minutes later, four black SUVs stopped at both ends of that alley, and eleven men got out, and not one of them ran and not one of them raised his voice. The man who walked in first was in his thirties, in a charcoal overcoat, and half of South Boston knew better than to say his name out loud. What happened in the next ten minutes, nobody standing in that alley could've predicted. Least of all the three young men who'd just made the worst mistake of their lives.
