"I'm not asking, Mr. Brennan. Move your things out by Friday." The new CEO had been in the building for six days when she slid a termination letter across her desk. Twenty years I had kept the lights on in that tower. I laid my keys out on her desk one by one and told her what each of them opened. All but one. A small brass key with the number thirteen. Her father gave it to me twenty-two years ago, and he made me promise who I would give it to.
That same night, I drove to the newest building the company owned, with a flashlight and a paint scraper, and I found out what someone had painted over on level B2. At two in the morning, I left forty photographs on the CEO's doorstep.
Behind the door of room thirteen was everything her father had wanted her to know, and everything the man who wanted me gone was desperate to destroy before Saturday morning.
🎧 Grab a drink, get comfortable, and tell me where you're watching from tonight.
👇 In the comments: if someone let you go on the word of a man they trusted, would you still knock on their door at two in the morning to warn them?
