How to Reverse Engineer Anything (REA) Tutorial. If buying isn't owning, is piracy really stealing? Software used to be something you bought once and kept. Now almost everything is a monthly subscription, and a new open-source tool called REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) lets your AI take an app apart and build you your own version. In this tutorial I explain how REA works, show you how to set it up by simply asking your AI, rebuild the Mac Notes app with it, and get into the big question: is any of this actually legal? REA works with AI agents like Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and Gemini CLI, and can inspect native apps, Electron apps, and even websites to explain how a feature works, show the evidence, and help you build your own version. ──────────────────────── Tool Featured: REA (Reverse Engineer Anything), free and open source REA on GitHub: https://github.com/morluto/rea Join the Discord:   / discord   ──────────────────────── TIMESTAMPS 0:00 Buying isn't owning 0:25 What is Reverse Engineer Anything? 1:59 How REA works 3:19 How to install it (just ask your AI) 4:10 Rebuilding the Mac Notes app 5:35 Reverse engineering isn't new 6:42 The GitHub hype 7:06 Is it legal? 7:45 Black Ops Zombies in your browser 9:19 What this means for software 11:28 Building is the new owning ──────────────────────── FAQ Q: What is REA (Reverse Engineer Anything)? A: An open-source tool that lets an AI agent inspect an app, explain how a feature works, show the evidence behind its findings, and help you build your own version. Q: How do I install REA? A: With Node.js and npm installed, run "npx rea-agents setup", choose your agent, approve the changes, and restart it. You can also just ask your AI to do it for you, as shown in the video. Q: Which AI agents work with REA? A: Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Gemini CLI, and any other agent that supports local MCP servers. Q: Is REA free? A: Yes, REA itself is free and MIT licensed. Some deeper native analysis uses separate tools like Hopper, Ghidra, or IDA, which have their own licences. Q: Does REA upload my app anywhere? A: REA runs its analysis locally. Your AI agent receives the results, and its model provider has its own data policy. Q: Is reverse engineering with REA legal? A: It depends on the software, your licence, and where you live. See the disclaimer below, and the video for more. ──────────────────────── Disclaimer: This video is for educational purposes only and is not legal advice. Many software licences prohibit reverse engineering, and copying or distributing someone else's code, design or assets can infringe their intellectual property. REA's own README says it is meant for lawful research, education, interoperability, software preservation, and analysing software you own or are authorised to examine. We are not affiliated with REA, Activision or any company mentioned. Use it responsibly and at your own risk. Which app would you rebuild first?
