In this Catalys Seminar, Professor Dawn Dowding shares her first-hand experience of the Commonwealth Fund Harkness Fellowship in Health Care Policy and Practice, reflecting on what the fellowship involved, why researchers and healthcare professionals might consider applying, and how the experience has influenced her career.
The Harkness Fellowship provides an opportunity for health services researchers and practitioners to spend up to 12 months in the United States, working alongside leading US researchers and policy experts. In this session, Dawn shares her own experience as a Fellow, offering insight into the opportunities, challenges and learning that come with undertaking an international fellowship.

Who is this for?
This session is for researchers, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals (AHPs), healthcare scientists, pharmacists, social workers and other healthcare professionals who are interested in developing their research career, exploring international opportunities or considering applying for a fellowship.
It may be particularly useful for anyone interested in health services research, clinical academic careers, research leadership or spending time working with research and policy experts internationally.
About Dawn
Professor Dawn Dowding is Professor in Clinical Decision Making and Head of the Division of Nursing, Midwifery and Social Work at the School of Health Sciences, University of Manchester.
Dawn is a nurse and health services researcher with expertise in clinical decision making and nursing informatics. She trained as a nurse at St Bartholomew's College of Nursing and Midwifery in London before completing a BSc (Hons) in Psychology with Nursing Studies at City University and a PhD in Psychology and Nursing at the University of Surrey.
As a Harkness Fellow, Dawn spent time in the United States developing her research and gaining first-hand experience of the US health and research environment. In this seminar, she reflects on that experience and the impact it has had on her career.
