James didn't lose because he failed to achieve his dreams. He succeeded—and discovered that success couldn't replace what he'd allowed to slip through his hands. The woman is long gone now. Perhaps she found somebody else. Perhaps she built the life James wasn't ready to build with her. There is no bitterness in his remembering. Maybe she's happy with somebody else I hope life worked out somehow James doesn't ask for his past to be rewritten. He simply understands it now in a way he couldn't when he was younger.
