For over a century, scientists believed the Ainu people of northern Japan were a "lost branch" of the Caucasian race — stranded at the edge of Asia, based purely on their beards, wavy hair, and light skin. In 1998, archaeologists on Rebun Island uncovered the remains of a woman who had lived roughly 3,800 years ago, and when her DNA was finally sequenced in 2019, it shattered that century-old theory completely. In this video, I trace the real origin of the Ainu: their direct, nearly unbroken 4,000-year genetic link to the ancient Jomon hunter-gatherers, the rare Y-chromosome haplogroup connecting them to isolated populations in Tibet and the Andaman Islands, the later genetic and cultural mixing with the seafaring Okhotsk culture, and how this discovery forced scientists to rewrite the "dual structure" model of Japanese ancestry into a three-part story. I also cover the traditional Ainu chise longhouse, the brutal 1899 assimilation law that nearly erased their language and culture, and the DNA evidence that ultimately became the scientific foundation for Japan's 2008 and 2019 recognition of the Ainu as an indigenous people.
