What does God want you to know before He sends you out? In Matthew 10, Jesus called His twelve disciples together and prepared them before sending them on mission. What He taught them is just as relevant for every believer today as it was then. In this message, we explore what Jesus told His disciples before sending them out, including the message they were to preach, how God provides for those He sends, what happens when people reject the gospel, and why God sends people out together rather than alone. We also look at how Jesus Himself modeled the obedience He calls us to, and what the Great Commission means for every follower of Christ today.
Before sending His disciples out into the world, Jesus called them together and prepared them for everything they would face. He looked out at the crowds with deep compassion, seeing people who were distressed and without direction, like sheep without a shepherd. The disciples who prayed for more workers became the very answer to that prayer, and before they went, Jesus made sure they knew what they needed to know. This principle still holds for every believer today. You cannot give out what you do not have, and you cannot share what you do not know. Come to Jesus first, before anything else.
God does not recruit the most impressive or well-connected people. God does not call the polished, the powerful, or the perfectly prepared. He calls ordinary people and works through them in extraordinary ways. From fishermen to tax collectors, from doubters to zealots, Jesus intentionally chose all kinds of people and paired them together for His purposes. He works through all kinds of people for His glory. If you have ever felt unqualified or overlooked, this is for you.
The message He sends them with has never changed: repent, turn toward God, and receive the mercy He is offering. He provides the message, the miracles, and the resources. The greatest miracle of all is not a physical healing but the moment God takes someone dead in their sin and makes them alive in Christ.
Every believer today carries the same commission the twelve were given. We are ambassadors, sent out to make disciples of all nations. The call is not reserved for pastors or missionaries. It belongs to every follower of Christ. Identify someone in your life who needs to hear the gospel or experience the love of Christ in a practical way. Go to Jesus first, ask Him to prepare the way, and then step out in obedience. He has already gone before you, and He will provide everything you need.
