Jaranwala is one of the oldest towns near Faisalabad, which is now one of the largest cities in Pakistan and Punjab. It was established along with Faisalabad at the start of the 20th century and was included in the Chenab Colony. Chenab Colony was the largest project of the Canal Colony system, which cleared the land for cultivation, brought irrigation to these lands, and helped farmers settle these areas. Some of the tribes of Punjab were already settled here, but many came from the Eastern Punjab. The town was inaugurated by the then Deputy Commissioner Michael Ferrar. Soon, it became a thriving project and a land of opportunity for many cultivators who came from distant lands and started their new lives here. Jaranwala became an agricultural hub where a number of crops were being produced. It became an important Mandi town which were connected with the Railway line as well. The city shared in interested connection with Sir Ganga Ram, who not only designed the town but also owned cultivable land here. Jaranwala was a place for all religions, with Sikhs, Hindus, and Muslims settled here. The area became a hotbed for revolutionary activities. Arjun Singh’s family moved here at the start of the 20th century and produced scions like Ajit Singh and Bhagat Singh. Mian Abdul Bari was another leader who played an important role in many movements like Reshmi Rumal, Hijrat Tehreek, and later in the Pakistan movement. Master Nand Lal was an important Congress leader who belonged to Jaranwala as well. Jaranwala has a rich history. Partition in 1947 was also a bloody affair in Jaranwala, after which the Sikh and Hindu population moved to India. Its villages still echo some vibes of the old canal colony system.
