Welcome to your Grade 10 Physics lesson! In this video, we dive into Unit 4, Section 4.6: The Electric Field. We'll be tackling the review questions step-by-step to help you understand the core concepts.
Whether you're preparing for a test or just need help with your homework, this video breaks down everything from the definition of electric field lines to calculating force and field strength. Let's get charged up! ⚡
In this session, we will cover the following review questions:
Question 1: What is an electric field line?
Question 2: Force on a charge in an electric field.
Question 3: Electric field due to a point charge.
Questions & Solutions:
1. What is an electric field line?
An electric field line is an imaginary line drawn in such a way that its direction at any point is the same as the direction of the electric field at that point. These lines help us visualize the strength and direction of the field around a charge or group of charges. They start on positive charges and end on negative charges, and the closer the lines are together, the stronger the field.
2. What is the magnitude and direction of the force exerted on a 3.50 µC charge by a 250 N/C electric field that points due East?
We use the formula F = qE.
· Magnitude: F = (3.50 × 10⁻⁶ C) × (250 N/C) = 8.75 × 10⁻⁴ N.
· Direction: Since the charge is positive, the force on it will be in the same direction as the electric field. Therefore, the force points due East.
3. Calculate the magnitude of the electric field 2.00 m from a point charge of 5.00 mC.
We use the formula E = k|q| / r², where k = 8.99 × 10⁹ Nm²/C².
· First, convert the charge to Coulombs: 5.00 mC = 5.00 × 10⁻³ C.
· Plug in the values:
E = (8.99 × 10⁹) × (5.00 × 10⁻³) / (2.00)²
E = (4.495 × 10⁷) / 4
E = 1.12 × 10⁷ N/C (or 11.2 × 10⁶ N/C).
