The cabin filter is located behind the glove box and helps keep dust, pollen, debris, and odors from entering the interior through the HVAC system. This is a very straightforward maintenance job that can be done at home in just a few minutes and does not require removing the entire glove box. I’m performing the replacement on my 2022 Volkswagen Arteon, but the basic procedure is similar across the Arteon platform. Tools / Parts Needed: Replacement cabin air filter that fits your VW Arteon Small flat plastic trim tool or small flat-blade screwdriver, optional Flashlight, optional Vacuum or detailing brush, optional for cleaning debris from the filter housing Basic procedure: 1. Open the glove box. 2. Release the glove-box damper/stop mechanism. 3. Carefully release the glove-box stops so the glove box can swing farther downward. 4. Remove the cabin-filter access cover behind the glove box. 5. Slide the old cabin air filter out. 6. Clean any loose debris from the housing. 7. Install the new filter in the correct orientation, paying attention to the airflow-direction arrow on the filter. 8. Reinstall the filter cover and return the glove box and damper to their original positions. If your Arteon has reduced HVAC airflow, a musty smell when the A/C is running, or the filter has simply been in the car for a while, it may be time for a replacement. This is one of the easiest DIY maintenance jobs you can perform on the VW Arteon and can save you from paying dealership labor for a simple filter replacement. The activated charcoal has the ability to absorb fumes and other odors from the air giving your cabin the freshest air possible. Please note that trapping those odors may result in a poor smell from the vents if an activated charcoal cabin filter is not changed often enough. These filters are recommended to be replaced once per year. This procedure is shown on a VW Arteon, but a similar cabin air filter setup is used on many MQB-platform Volkswagens, including certain Golf, GTI, Jetta, Tiguan, Atlas, Atlas Cross Sport, Golf SportWagen, Golf Alltrack, e-Golf and Taos models.
