Achec Malual Ariik (Achecdit) Tells Her Life Story | Family, Loss and the Return to Bor

In this 50-minute interview, the late Achec Malual Ariik, known as Achecdit, tells the story of her life in her own words. Born in Angakuei, she was the wife of the late Chief Ayom Dor Yor and the mother of General Malual Ayom Dor Yoor. Achecdit recalls her family life and the killing of her husband by the Sudanese army in the 1960s. She speaks about raising the children left behind and her continued visits to his grave. She also reflects on Bor after its destruction in 1991 and explains why she wanted people to resettle on their land rather than move into towns. AG Media recorded this conversation on 6 December 2020 in Pakuau, Bor. Achecdit could not recall every date, but she shared the events as she remembered them. During the interview, she sang a dising song composed against her father, Malual Ariik Ajak of Angakuei, while holding her symbolic lion. Achecdit died in 2026. This recording preserves her voice, her memories and a part of her family’s history for those who come after her.
