This was our first day visiting the gorillas and I understandably focused on the silverbacks because they are so awe inspiring. The adventure begins with meeting the family's massive, dominant silverback—a breathtaking moment where time stands still. Watch as these incredible giants live their lives with absolute peace and confidence, stripping bark, munching on celery, and moving gracefully just inches away from our group of eight trekkers. There is a profound, quiet magic in their presence; they live without any fear of us, completely welcoming us into their world. We were still “face to face with the silverback” when a young gorilla climbed over us in the trees. We were unaware of this little guy, being in absolute awe of the silverback, but the silverback was watching him. And when the silverback came to within inches of us (you can see leaves falling on us from the disturbance in the tree and hear one woman say “he’s touching my leg”) he was simply getting into a better position to protect the youngster if he dropped out of the tree. You can see the little rascal briefly as the camera swayed during all the excitement. What makes this video unique is the raw, authentic format: there are no voice-overs, no narration, and absolutely no scripts. This is simply a real, edited version of what actually happened during our trek. The experience is set to the vibrant rhythms of "Best Friend" by local Rwandan artist Nel Ngabo, blending a great pop track with the real-life sounds of the forest, the guides, and the gorillas themselves.
