Listen to the fascinating sounds of the Amazon rainforest after nightfall, recorded on the edge of the river. The jungles of Brazil are dark and lush, with barely any visibility during daytime. As soon as the sun sets though, the mysterious soundscape is turned up to 11. Small creatures need to be very careful how and when they communicate, otherwise they risk becoming prey. Larger creatures don't care much about being noisy and stroll around the water's edge without much care. The insect chorus is deafening and seems to be coming from everywhere at once. This is likely an evolutionary adaptation, so that potential predators find it very difficult to pinpoint the location of individuals. Some frogs will call from one place and then quickly move away, while others tend to synchronise their calls and then quickly become quiet. Bamboo rats only call every 10 to 15 minutes and then quickly disappear in the impenetrable canopy. The Pauraques' call and response seems to have no beginning and end. Each and every individual playing a part knows full well that straying from the rules is a matter of life and death. They also know that they don't have the choice to not communicate, lest htey become lost or invisible to their community or mates. What looks simply like a wall of noise on the surface is actually a very carefully orchestrated performance that leaves nothing to chance. Being out in the Amazon rainforest at night is primarily an aural experience. Maybe a bit tactile too, as you brush against huge spiderwebs and humid undergrowth. The oppressive heat and humidity enhance the minute electrical signals that your body uses to sense the world. Sound travels better in humid air, and visual communication is virtually impossible in the dark thick jungle. What better location to immerse yourself in the soundscape? Recorded in the Javari Valley with Zoom F3 and DPA 6060. Enjoying the videos I upload on here?
