Abram / Abraham - 99 years old, name changes from exalted father to father of a multitude. Sarai / Sarah - 89 years old, name changes from my princess to princess of nations, now promised to be mother of nations and kings. Ishmael - 13 years old, Abraham's son through Hagar, blessed but not the covenant son. Isaac - Not yet born, name means he laughs, chosen as the son of covenant promise. God - Reveals Himself as El Shaddai, God Almighty. Name changes meant destiny changes. A new name given by a king or god meant a new identity and calling. Circumcision was known in Egypt and other cultures as a puberty rite, but here God transforms it into a sign of covenant for an 8-day-old infant, showing belonging by grace not achievement. Cutting the flesh was a blood sign of commitment, similar to ancient treaties. For a 99-year-old chief to circumcise his entire household was a radical act of public devotion and painful obedience. Thirteen was the age a boy became a man in that culture, so Ishmael being 13 is significant. This all happens in Canaan, where Abraham is still living as a foreigner, owning no land except his tents. He is promised the whole land of Canaan as permanent possession even though he owns none of it yet. The covenant is spoken in Canaan, looking forward to future possession. After 13 years of silence since Ishmael's birth, God appeared to 99-year-old Abram as God Almighty and re-established His covenant. He changed Abram's name to Abraham, father of many nations, and Sarai to Sarah, mother of nations. He instituted circumcision as the physical sign of the everlasting covenant to be done on the 8th day for every male. He specifically promised a son through Sarah herself within one year and told them to name him Isaac. Abraham laughed in disbelief but obeyed. On that very same day, he circumcised himself at 99, Ishmael at 13, and every male in his household, showing immediate obedience to the covenant sign.
