Britain Is Building the World’s Largest Offshore Wind Farm: The Scale Is Unbelievable
Around 130 km off the coast of Yorkshire, in the middle of the North Sea, Britain is building Dogger Bank Wind Farm. It is billed as the largest offshore wind farm in the world. When all three phases are complete, it will produce 3.6 gigawatts of power, enough for about six million UK homes and roughly 5% of the country’s electricity demand.
In this video, we look at just how big this project really is:
🌬️ The numbers: 3.6 GW across three 1.2 GW phases, Dogger Bank A, B and C
🌀 The giant turbines: GE Vernova’s Haliade-X, rated at 13 MW and 14 MW, with 277 turbines planned in total
🚢 The massive jack-up vessel Voltaire, built to lift and install turbine components at sea
⚡ The first HVDC (high-voltage direct current) transmission system on a UK wind farm, and why it matters
📍 Why a sandbank in the North Sea is such a good location
🏗️ The partners: SSE Renewables and Equinor, in a 50/50 joint venture
🔮 What’s next, including the proposed Dogger Bank D expansion
💷 The cost, the challenges, and what it means for UK energy security and net zero
The turbines will cover an area close to the size of Greater London, and the farm is expected to operate for at least 35 years. We also cover the debate over cost, grid connection and whether the UK can hit its offshore wind targets.
