ΗΠΑ. It was yesterday afternoon when the always striking spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, began responding to a media question regarding Poland’s plans for the Kaliningrad Region. In doing so, she reiterated statements repeatedly made by the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov: that any act of armed aggression against the Kaliningrad Region would trigger a response—one that would be, quite literally, incinerating—utilizing all the means at Russia’s disposal, and that the resulting war would be very short. At that same time, the Russian Ministry of Defence also released an update directly concerning the Baltic region. This announcement concerned a scheduled flight exercise involving Tu-22M3 bombers over the neutral waters of the Baltic Sea. The four-hour mission also included Russian Su-35S and Su-30SM fighter jets, which escorted the bombers; at one point during the flight, the aircraft were also accompanied by fighter jets from foreign nations. It is worth noting that the Tu-22M3s are part of Russia’s strategic bomber fleet—meaning they are capable of carrying nuclear weapons. Consequently, the timing of this announcement—coinciding with statements by Maria Zakharova—appears far from coincidental. Zakharova reiterated that any Western attack on Kaliningrad would be met with a devastating and formidable response, and that such a conflict would be extremely brief—implying, in plain terms, the use of nuclear weapons.
