▶ Taoist Diary — the app version of this channel: https://www.taoistdiary.com One passage read aloud every morning. 10 books, 367 chapters, free to read. No ads, no streaks. iOS + Android. There is a moment nobody talks about, because there is no way to say it that does not sound like a confession. You hang up the phone with someone you love, and you wait for the ache that always used to come afterward, and it does not come. Not that day, and not for a long time before it. And the conclusion you reach about yourself, standing there, is that something in you has gone quiet and nobody told you when. This is a slow, unhurried look at what actually happened. The claim arrives early and it is simple: you did not stop loving anyone. You stopped being hungry. The modern half comes from 1998, when Daniel Gilbert published a paper in the Journal of Personality and Social Psychology with Elizabeth Pinel, Timothy Wilson, Stephen Blumberg and Thalia Wheatley, called Immune Neglect: A Source of Durability Bias in Affective Forecasting. Across six studies, people predicted how long a bad thing would keep hurting, and the prediction ran long every time. The reason they proposed is that a set of ordinary mental habits works quietly to take the edge off, out of sight, and we do not know it is there. So we never put it in the arithmetic. The old half comes from the sixteenth chapter of the Tao Te Ching, which is often read as a chapter about sitting still. In James Legge's 1891 translation, things return to their root, and that returning is what we call stillness. Then comes the line the chapter is built toward: the knowledge of that unchanging rule produces a grand capacity and forbearance. Capacity. Rong. A vessel word, and what it measures is how much room there is. The character that follows it is gong: public, common, belonging to everyone rather than to one claimant. The parable is from the Sikh tradition, and it is the first time this channel has gone there. Kanhaiya, born in 1648 near Wazirabad, carried a goatskin water bag onto the ground around Anandpur during the fighting and gave water to the wounded of both armies, including the men who had come to take the town. His own side accused him of it. What Guru Gobind Singh did about that accusation is the whole point of the story. The practice at the end is small enough to do this week: go to one person you have not been missing, stay exactly as long as you would have stayed back when the ache was doing the driving, and go with nothing to collect. One thing said plainly, because it matters. If what you are describing is that nothing reaches you at all, that the good news does not land either, then what you are carrying is bigger than this, and it is worth saying out loud to somebody who can actually sit with it. 0:00 The Call That Should Have Hurt 2:02 You Did Not Stop Loving, You Stopped Being Hungry 3:44 What The Immune Neglect Study Does Not Say 4:41 You Are Not Cold, You Are Awake 5:42 Tao Te Ching 16, And The Return To The Root 6:38 Rong Is A Vessel Word, Not A Feeling 8:02 Kanhaiya Carries Water To Both Sides 10:55 What Guru Gobind Singh Said About It 12:24 Go To Someone You Have Not Missed 13:51 The Cloth Tie Comes Off The Tree If any of this reached the place it was meant to reach, the like button genuinely helps it find the next person. And if you would like to keep walking these quiet ideas, subscribe and stay a while. #taoism #taoistwisdom #laotzu ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ 📿 TAOIST DIARY — THE APP https://www.taoistdiary.com One Taoist audio for every day: a single passage read aloud each morning, a short written meditation beside it, and the ten classics this channel reads from — the Tao Te Ching, Zhuangzi, Marcus Aurelius, Epictetus, the Dhammapada and more, in the same public-domain translations.
