Our walk starts off at the Glenridding car park by Ullswater on April 25th 2026. Nice long days at this time of the year so this is one of our longer walks and we ended up adding Dollywaggon Pike to our planned route and managed to bag six Wainwrights. It was a beautiful day which meant great views but also lots of flies in some locations.
We took an unorthodox route up to Raise which we would not do again. It meant the walk continuously spiralled steeply uphill which made legs and feet sore as one leg was always slightly higher than the other. Once up there the hardest part of the climbing had been done and it was largely a nice ridge walk took us past Whiteside and up to Helvellyn. Being on a popular group of Fells on a sunny Saturday, there were plenty of people about. We left Helvellyn and continued to Nethermost Pike making the decision to push on to Dollywaggon Pike which looked like a stones throw away. This was a mis-judgement and was a lot further than we thought. Luckily it was a day with plenty of daylight hours so we did not have the stress of worrying if we were going to be returning in the dark. Now that we have done it, we are glad to have ticked off the extra Wainwright though.
One of the parts of the route we were dreading was Swirrel Edge. Although I have done both Swirrel Edge and Striding Edge before I was much younger, fitter and more confident back then. In the end it proved relatively easy as we had built it totally out of proportion in our heads.
The long walk back down to the car park was not as bad as we thought it would be and paths that were easy underfoot were a welcome sight.
It was a long tiring walk but so worthwhile. Definitely one for the longer and drier days of the year.
Have you done this route before or planning it in the future? I would love to hear your stories.
