Would You Plug Into A Perfect World?

Picture a world where nearly everyone lives inside a headset: work, friends, travel, and love all in virtual reality. The idea is older than computers, from Morton Heilig's 1962 Sensorama to Ivan Sutherland's 1968 headset. Today's headsets are far from enough: eyes resolve about sixty pixels per degree, touch can't be faked, and a mismatch with your inner ear causes cybersickness.
Even if solved, the body still needs food, water, sleep, and movement, someone has to keep the servers and bodies running, and whoever owns the worlds holds enormous power. Robert Nozick's 1974 experience machine asks whether you'd plug in at all, and most people say no.
What's solid: current VR can't match eyes, touch, or balance, and the energy demands would be enormous. What's speculative: whether people would ever choose it. The more likely future is a blend of virtual and physical, not a replacement.
