However, mentioning chemotherapy often brings fear to patients and their families, primarily due to its side effects, with hair loss being a significant concern. Chemotherapy Drugs and Their Impact Chemotherapy refers to the use of drugs to kill cancer cells or shrink tumors. There are over 100 different chemotherapy drugs, each used for various cancers and stages. Sometimes, a single drug is used, while other times, combinations of two, three, or more drugs are administered. These drugs target rapidly dividing cells, which is why they can effectively attack cancer cells. However, chemotherapy drugs cannot differentiate between cancer cells and normal body cells. Effect on Rapidly Dividing Cells Apart from cancer cells, several other body cells also divide rapidly. These include cells in the digestive system, blood-forming tissues like bone marrow, and hair follicles. Chemotherapy affects these areas as well, leading to side effects such as nausea, vomiting, increased bowel movements, and diarrhea due to its impact on the digestive system. Similarly, chemotherapy can reduce hemoglobin, platelets, and white blood cells due to its effect on the bone marrow. When it impacts hair follicles, it results in hair loss. Temporary Nature of Side Effects It's important to understand that normal body cells have a greater ability to repair themselves compared to cancer cells. After chemotherapy sessions, as you rest, normal cells begin to regenerate and repair, leading to the recovery of these side effects. Hence, hair loss experienced during chemotherapy is usually temporary, and hair can regrow after the treatment ends. Conclusion This was a discussion on why hair loss occurs during chemotherapy.
