Most old silver-colored necklaces get filed as costume in about four seconds, by someone who turned it over and did not see the word "sterling." That decision is wrong more often than you would think, and the polishing cloth that usually follows it destroys the proof.
Eight kinds of necklace that get misfiled, one hero clue on each, and the short list of places to photograph before you clean or test anything.
Inside: why a number that is not 925 can still be a recognized silver fineness. Why counting the towers on a Danish mark matters more than recognizing them. Why a modern clasp on an old chain is usually not what people assume. How to tell decorative black inlay from ordinary tarnish before you scrub. Why a missing stone can be the best view you get of how a piece was built. And the transcription habit that separates people who solve worn marks from people who guess at them.
No treasure talk. No value promises. Just where to look, in what order, and what each clue does NOT prove.

COMMENT: If you have a mark you cannot read, tell me exactly which characters you can make out and where it sits on the piece. Clasp, end link, or back of a panel.
