Why Can't We Ride Rhinos Like Horses?

Horses were domesticated partly because their ancestors evolved to flee danger rather than fight it, making them naturally easier to calm and control. Rhinos do the opposite — they're solitary, territorial, and defend themselves aggressively rather than run, and a 2024 study on ungulate domestication found a heightened physiological stress response to human contact ("capture myopathy") is one of the biggest blockers to taming hoofed animals like rhinos and zebras.
