Something does not completely add up in Cleveland.
Shedeur Sanders is sitting behind Deshaun Watson. Other NFL teams have been dealing with major quarterback injuries. Trade speculation surrounding Shedeur has exploded. Yet the Browns have continued holding onto one of the most fascinating young quarterbacks in football.
And G Bush's larger argument surrounding Cleveland's quarterback future raises an intriguing question: what if keeping Shedeur is part of a much bigger plan?
Browns insider Mary Kay Cabot recently reported that Cleveland had no plans to trade Sanders or Dillon Gabriel despite the growing quarterback market around the league. That immediately pushed back against speculation connecting Shedeur with quarterback-needy teams.
Then Jeremy Fowler added another layer.
Fowler reported that Cleveland could potentially welcome a deal for one of its backup quarterbacks if the price were right. That does not mean the Browns are actively shopping Shedeur. It means another team would likely have to give Cleveland enough value to make surrendering its current QB2 worthwhile.
And that is where Jimmy Haslam's previous comments suddenly become extremely important.
Before the season, Haslam refused to commit to Watson, Sanders or anybody else as Cleveland's quarterback beyond 2026. He said one quarterback could have a great season and become Cleveland's answer for years, or the Browns could determine that none of their current options are the answer.
In other words, Cleveland was still evaluating everything.
Watson is now winning games and has Cleveland sitting at 3-1, but he is also playing the final season of the massive contract he signed after arriving from Houston. Shedeur, meanwhile, remains under an inexpensive rookie contract for multiple seasons.
That gives Cleveland options.
Trading Sanders now would eliminate one of them.
Keeping him allows Todd Monken and the Browns to continue developing Shedeur behind Watson while preserving the possibility of a completely different quarterback direction after this season.
That does not mean Cleveland has secretly decided Shedeur will become QB1.
But it explains why simply accepting a mid-round draft pick for him might make little sense.
Sanders already has seven NFL starts from his rookie season. He competed with Watson throughout the offseason, and Monken admitted that Shedeur closed the gap during the competition. Most importantly, Cleveland already controls his contract.
Why surrender that unless another team makes an offer the Browns simply cannot refuse?
This is where G Bush's continued focus on Cleveland's long-term quarterback problem becomes important. The Browns cannot evaluate this situation only through what Watson is doing today. They have to decide what gives them the best chance to finally escape the quarterback uncertainty that has followed this organization for years.
Haslam has openly discussed building Cleveland toward sustainable contention.
Shedeur could still be part of that evaluation.
So while trade speculation continues exploding around the NFL, Cleveland's refusal to simply move Sanders may be telling us something much bigger.
The Browns do not necessarily know who their quarterback of the future is yet.
And that might be exactly why they are refusing to give Shedeur Sanders away.
