Each began life as a song setting of a German poem; No. 3 sets Ferdinand Freiligrath's "O lieb, so lang du lieben kannst" - "O love, as long as you can love." Liszt then arranged all three for solo piano, and this version became by far the best known. A flowing accompaniment carries a singing melody that passes between the hands, and two rapid cadenzas separate its three statements of the theme. ABOUT THE COMPOSER Franz Liszt (1811-1886) was a Hungarian composer, pianist and teacher, and the most celebrated keyboard virtuoso of the nineteenth century. He effectively invented the modern solo piano recital, pioneered the symphonic poem, and taught and championed a generation of younger composers. In later life he took minor orders in the Catholic Church and wrote increasingly spare, forward-looking music.
