Today, I visited the beautiful Deokpung Valley in Gagok-myeon, Samcheok-si, Gangwon State, South Korea. Nestled beneath Eungbongsan Mountain (999 meters above sea level), Deokpung Valley is one of Korea's most spectacular natural valleys. Formed by ancient glaciers over countless years, this magnificent gorge stretches for more than 10 kilometers and measures approximately 60 to 70 meters in width. Crystal-clear streams, towering rock cliffs, and lush forests combine to create one of the country's finest summer destinations. Eungbongsan Mountain lies on the border between Samcheok, Gangwon State, and Uljin, North Gyeongsang Province. Because its silhouette resembles a hawk soaring into the sky, it was once known as Maebong, meaning "Hawk Peak." According to local legend, a man from the Jo family living in Uljin lost his hunting hawk and later found it on this mountain. From then on, the mountain became known as Eungbongsan, using the Chinese character "鷹 (Eung)," meaning hawk. It is also said that after he buried his parents in a famous feng shui site on the mountain, his family prospered for generations. The nearby Deokpung Village derives its name from the Chinese characters meaning "great virtue" (德) and "abundance" (豊), reflecting its reputation as a peaceful and prosperous place. Surrounded by mountains on all sides, the village also served as a safe refuge during times of war and conflict. Deokpung Valley is home to three famous natural pools known as the First, Second, and Third Yongso. According to legend, during the reign of Queen Jindeok of the Silla Kingdom, the great Buddhist monk Uisang carved three wooden geese and released them into the sky. One of them landed in Yongso Valley within Deokpung Valley, causing the heavens and the earth to shake and a massive flood to occur, ultimately creating the three Yongso pools that remain today. Visitors begin their journey at the Deokpung Valley parking area, but it takes about an hour to walk to the entrance of the valley. Those wishing to save time can take the village shuttle bus, which costs 3,000 KRW one way. There is also a campground near the parking area that can be reserved online. In addition, Deokpung Valley is recognized as one of the major geological attractions within the Samcheok Geopark, making it an important destination for both nature lovers and geology enthusiasts. In today's video, I invite you to experience the refreshing waters, dramatic canyon scenery, and breathtaking natural beauty of Deokpung Valley. I hope you enjoy this unforgettable journey into one of Korea's hidden natural treasures.
