Sankoo District Creation Celebrated with Grand Public Gathering; LG Says Decision Fulfils Long-Standing Aspiration Kargil, October 16: Thousands of people from across the Sankoo region gathered at Mini Stadium Sankoo to celebrate the creation of Sankoo as the eighth district of the Union Territory of Ladakh, fulfilling a long-pending demand of the people. People from different religious, political and social organisations participated in the celebrations. The gathering included people from areas stretching from TSG to Parkachik and Ichu to Umba. Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena, who was accorded a grand welcome at Sankoo, said the demand for district status was genuine and had been pending for decades. He said community leaders had consistently raised the issue during his recent meetings with them. The Lieutenant Governor said he had assured the delegations that their demand would be conveyed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He said he subsequently took up the matter with the Union Home Minister and conveyed the aspirations of the people. Mr Saxena said that after approval, necessary instructions were issued and the notification was prepared. He said he personally signed the notification and brought it to Sankoo to share the historic decision with the people. He appreciated the community leaders for their commitment and said their objective was to ensure that administration reaches the doorstep of the people. He said the creation of Sankoo District is not the end of the journey but the beginning of a new phase of development. The Lieutenant Governor called for collective efforts to take the new district forward and assured the people that genuine issues would continue to receive attention. He also thanked the people of Sankoo for the warm welcome accorded to him. CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr Mohammad Jaffar Akhoon expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, LG Ladakh Vinai Kumar Saxena and all those who supported the demand. He said granting district status to Sankoo had been a long-standing dream and that political, religious and social organisations came together to work towards its fulfilment. People from different sections of society also expressed gratitude to the Government of India and the UT Administration of Ladakh, saying the decision would bring administration closer to the people, improve public service delivery and open new avenues for development. Chief Secretary Ladakh Ashish Kundra, DGP Ladakh Anand Jain, MP Ladakh Haji Hanifa Jan, CEC LAHDC Kargil Dr Mohammad Jaffar Akhoon and Chief Patron of Anjuman-e-Sahib-e-Zaman Aga Syed Mohammad Migi Outh, among others, were present on the occasion.
