She flew to Leningrad for their dates. She waited for him in metro stations, sometimes for ninety minutes. For more than a year, she believed he worked in criminal investigation. He was a KGB officer. Then came the tests she could never prove. A breakup over a dance, and a note at her door two weeks later. A stranger in a courtyard who told her it was fate. A proposal that began like a breakup. And one test that Putin himself described: before his posting to East Germany, the KGB checked his wife "under the full programme", and she was told nothing. Years later, Lyudmila said: "Vladimir Vladimirovich has certainly been testing me throughout our life together." In 2013, during the intermission of a ballet at the Kremlin, they announced their divorce. Putin said she had "stood her watch".
