No money. Just walking. Today, I’m visiting Shishijima, a small and quiet island in the Seto Inland Sea, Kagawa, Japan. Before heading into the mountains, I take a short detour to the “Sky Garden,” a flower garden that has been lovingly restored and maintained by local volunteers. Then I make my way to one of Shishijima’s most remarkable sights — a giant camphor tree estimated to be around 1,200 years old. This ancient tree is a designated Natural Monument of Kagawa Prefecture. Its unusual shape is believed to have been formed after a landslide during the Meiji era. Even after parts of the tree were damaged, it continued to grow new trunks, showing its incredible vitality. For this reason, the giant camphor tree is also known as a guardian of Shishijima Island. Standing beside a tree that has lived for more than a thousand years, I felt strangely grateful just to share a little time with it. From Kusunokura Observatory, the Seto Inland Sea stretches out before me like a painting. I then climb toward the summit of Shishijima, reaching an elevation of 109 meters. No music. No need to hurry. Just the sounds of the sea, my footsteps, and a quiet day on a small island in Japan. If you enjoy slow living, quiet places, and discovering the lesser-known side of Japan, I hope this little journey finds its way to you.
