The Devil knocks at closing time and wants a fiddle duel: her soul and her ghosts against his fastest tune. 🎻🔥
One rule: whoever the room sings back to wins. A fiddle-duel tavern song for your D&D table, and the next tale after "Room for Ghosts."
It's the last tune of the night at the Merry Tavern when he walks in: silver hair, a wide black hat, a black fiddle and far too much confidence. The fiddler lets him in anyway. Her black cat hops up on the bar, rolls for initiative and calls it fair.
He plays faster than a heartbeat, sparks flying off the bow, and he keeps glancing over to check that she's watching. The ghosts don't make a sound. Then she lifts her fiddle and plays the slow one, the tune she plays when the last guests go.

🎵 Lyrics
[Intro — The Devil]
Knock, knock, knock — it's the Devil at your door!
I heard your fiddle from the road and I came back for more.
One fiddle duel, little fiddler, if you dare:
your soul, your ghosts, and your full attention — fair and square!
[Verse 1 — The Fiddler]
Last tune of the night and the lamps burning low,
when the Devil comes knocking — well, in he can go.
My black cat takes the bar and he's calling it fair,
he rolls for initiative, tail in the air.
[Pre-Chorus]
So I fiddle against the Devil, and the cat makes it plain:
the one that the room sings back to wins the game.
If I lose, then the door shuts and the ghosts are his;
if I win, then the fire burns on — that's all there is.
[Chorus]
Come in, there's room for you,
pull up a chair, the fire's still gold.
Come in, there's room for you,
nobody waits outside in the cold.
[Verse 2 — The Devil]
I'll play you a reel that'll scorch the floor,
faster than a heartbeat, faster than before!
Every note's a knife and every string's a spark —
are you watching? Say you're watching in the dark!
[Verse 3 — The Fiddler]
Every run was a marvel, every note was a flame,
but the ghosts sat still, and nobody sang his name.
They stared at the sparks that were flying from his bow —
he kept on glancing over, just to see me watch him go —
and the room stayed silent, and he did not know.
[Verse 4 — The Devil]
Round two, little fiddler, I'll go faster still!
Every string in the house is bending to my will!
Sixty notes a second till the rafters start to shake —
and not one soul in the room has a song left to make!
[Fiddle Duel]
[Verse 5 — The Fiddler]
So I lifted my fiddle and I played him slow,
the tune that I play when the last guests go,
the one with the door in it, the one that says "stay" —
and a ghost by the fire began humming away.
[Chorus — The Fiddler and the Ghosts]
Come in, there's room for you,
pull up a chair, the fire's still gold.
Come in, there's room for you,
nobody waits outside in the cold.
[Bridge — The Fiddler]
He can play it fast and he can play it high,
he can make the whole tavern forget how to sigh,
but there's one thing the Devil never learned to play:
the tune that says "stay" — the tune that says "stay".
[Verse 6 — The Devil]
Well, I'll be damned — and I have been, you know.
The room's all singing, and it isn't for my show.
I could outplay you but I cannot make them stay,
so I'll tip my hat and take my time on my way.
[Final Chorus — Everyone]
Wait — come in, there's room for you,
pull up a chair, the fire's still gold.
Come in, there's room for you,
even the Devil's welcome in from the cold.
Come in, there's room for you,
pull up a chair, the fire's still gold.
Come in, there's room for you,
everyone's welcome in from the cold.
[Outro — The Fiddler]
Morning on the floorboards, the fire burning low,
a Devil in the corner, snoring soft and slow,
my cat's sitting on his hat and he calls it fair —
and the door stands open. There's always room there.
