I Visited Radioactive Niagara Falls—Why Won't Kathy Hochul?

For decades, millions of tourists have visited Niagara Falls, but few know about the toxic legacy buried just beyond the famous waterfalls. In Part 7 of my ongoing investigation into the decline and neglect of Niagara Falls, New York, I visit neighborhoods where residents have discovered radioactive waste in their backyards—a legacy dating back to the Manhattan Project and the development of the first atomic bomb. I speak with homeowners who have been evacuated, families worried about their health, and attorney Christen E. Civiletto, author of the new book, Thundering Waters: the Toxic Legacy of Niagara Falls. She has spent years documenting the region's environmental history. Residents say they've been left in the dark for years while radioactive contamination spread beneath their homes. Many are demanding that New York Governor Kathy Hochul declare the area a Class 1 Superfund Site, but despite being in Western New York while this crisis unfolded, she has not visited the affected neighborhood to meet with residents, according to those interviewed in this video.
