Stuck at 6,000 Feet in the Talkeetna Mountains | Alaska Bush Flying

Alaska bush flying doesn’t always go according to plan. On this Super Cub adventure deep in the Talkeetna Mountains, five Cubs leave Lake Hood for a day of backcountry flying, remote mountain landings, and exploring some incredible Alaska wilderness. After several backcountry landings and a stop at the remote Sled Strip, Brady and I split off to explore a new landing spot high in the mountains. At nearly 6,000 feet, we made several passes checking the terrain before Brady landed his Super Cub, followed by the Chaos Cub. Both landings went perfectly. The landing was the easy part. While taxiing around to park, I found an incredibly soft patch of ground and buried the Chaos Cub nearly to the axles. We were deep in the Talkeetna Mountains, nobody knew exactly where we were, and the airplane wasn't going anywhere. What followed was nearly two hours of pushing, moving rocks, fighting the mud, and slowly working the Cub back onto solid ground. Once we finally got it free, we still had another problem—how do you take off without taxiing back through the same soft ground that got you stuck in the first place? We eventually found a way to taxi uphill and use the slope for a downhill takeoff. After getting both Cubs safely back in the air, we made one more backcountry landing at Iron Sight before heading home to Anchorage. Five Cubs, remote Alaska, new landing spots, mountain flying, and one very muddy Super Cub. Just another day of Alaska backcountry aviation.
